Movie Review; Hostel [2005]

'Three backpackers head to a Slovak city that promises to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaits them..'

Hostel is one of those movies that I felt had to be watched at least once or twice to get the full feel for it. I first watched it on TV when a while after it was first released- and honestly; I didn't like it. [at the time, I also wasn't too fond of horror as much as I am now.] It wasn't until I watched it again [first time since the first time around] a few months ago, that I actually really appreciated it for what it was.. The one thing I will say about Hostel if you haven't seen it is to make sure you push through to the end. I've talked to a few friends about the movie, and they agree that the first half feels fairly boring [during your first viewing of the movie itself], and nothing super exciting happens until the last half an hour-ish. But let's rewind a fair chunk first.. let's look at what actually happens in Hostel!
———————————————————————————–
Like any good horror film, It's about a group of friends [isn't that usually the case?] who are in Amsterdam where they find themselves locked out of their hostel. [they're backpacking through the country] Considering they are locked out, they decide to walk around when they are invited into a man's house. This man decides to tell them about another hostel somewhere in eastern Europe where the women are all extremely hot and have an unquenchable taste for American men..[see where this is headed?] Naturally, when they get there, the friends decide that the man was right- and everything is almost too good to be true. That this 'better' hostel- is to die for.

[haha, 'to die for'. you're hilarious, Warren.]

 Now, a lot of people claim that the film itself isn't extremely gory like it was advertised to be- but I personally feel that the gore that was there- was placed well enough to make it effective. [can't have it being too over the top, it may ruin the effect] One scene in particular is where a guy uses a blowtorch on someone's eye- and you see the whole after effect. [writer's note: the following picture is not for the faint of heart/squeamish]

Ultimately, you see her eye all pus filled, and it's a gnarly scene to say in the least, but I feel that it was necessary to show that this movie isn't exactly a happy one. Unless you count the revenge sequence nearing the end.. The last thing I'll leave you with is that Hostel actually spawned 2 sequels- I've only seen the 2nd one, and it follows a group of girls going to Rome to study abroad. The third one is apparently nothing like the first two, so I shall have to decide if I'm going to see it or not.. FINALLY, if you're okay with horror films, and actually like graphic content- I totally recommend this film, it's directed/written by Eli Roth- known for the classic known as Cabin Fever!

Let's talk comic books and their movie adaptations..

 Sometimes, it can become difficult to add all the elements/characters of a comic book/novel into a movie because of timing, or simply because they couldn't make it fit into the story. [take The Lord Of The Rings films for example; those are some fucking long movies.. and they still missed parts from the books.] Other times, Hollywood decides to change something entirely, and hardcore fans find themselves mislead, and ultimately- upset. Now, although we can't promise that everything will go the way we want it [we can always dream, right?]; sometimes a few characters have to be left behind, or even changed- all for the sake of the movie. Here, I've compiled a list of a few comic book movie adaptations that I feel may or may not offend some people..
———————————————————————————–
  • Number One- Josh Whedon says that Loki will not be in Avengers 2;

  Although not said exactly like that, he pretty well hinted at it when he spoke on The Empire Podcast. About half an hour into the interview, he spoke about [very small] details about what he's coming up with for Avengers2 and then he went and dropped the bomb:
'Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment [in Avengers 2] First of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki’s not there to say those terrible things. Although I do think we should bring the word back. Not as an insult, it’s just a nice word..' -Josh Whedon
What does this mean? Time will tell, I suppose..

  • Number Two- John C. Riley has been confirmed as Rhomann Dey in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy;

Don't get me wrong, I laugh every time I watch Stepbrothers, because John C. Riley is hilarious.. Hell, I even liked watching him in Tim & Eric. However, I'm not so sure I know how I feel about him playing a superhero.. especially someone like Rhomann Dey, For those that don't know, Rhomann Dey is the Nova Corps leader in Guardians of the Galaxy, and will no doubt be the same in the movie adaptation.
However, according to HitFix, Marvel made an offer to John C. Reilly to take this part calling him “The Agent Coulson of the Guardians movies.” In the comics though, Rhomann Dey is the head of the Nova Corps and not a human being from planet Earth. So obviously, it seems that a few changes have been made to help make the character fit into the movie. let's just hope it works out for the better.

 Number Three-  Doctor Strange has been confirmed for the Marvel Movie-verse Phase #3;

I could just say the following, because I've been waiting a long time to say it; fucking finally! After Spider-Man, I feel that Doc Strange is one of my favorite Marvel heroes. He's both smart, and extremely powerful. There hasn't been a definite say on who would be playing [Doctor] Stephen Strange, but Kevin Feige [a film producer and President of Production at Marvel Studios] has promised that a Doctor Strange movie will “definitely” be joining Ant Man in the Marvel Movie-verse. It won’t be for a while though, considering both of these movies are set for release AFTER the second Avengers film. Other than the points above, there's really not much else on Phase#3, except for the fact that Kevin Feige told MTV that if they wanted more characters to add to the Marvel movie-verse, "they wouldn't have to look too far.."

So how do you feel about all these new comic to movie adaptations coming out? Are you sad that Loki won't be in Avengers2? [I know I am!] What about the Doctor Strange movie; yay or nay? Let me know! Welcome back! [first post since losing internet - RIP]

As you may or may not have known, Stephanie and I recently [back on June 1st] moved into our first apartment together! [fucking finally, Am I Right?] However, one thing that I wasn't used to right away was the [lack of] internet. As it turned out, we wouldn't be getting internet for nearly three weeks; and had to find ways to occupy our time accordingly. Thankfully, being in the 21st century- we had video games at our disposal and a load of movies to watch if time allowed. [and I mean a load- see our new movie shelf below]

[the worst part is that's 'part one' of a bookshelf for movies!]
 ———————————————————————————–
The other thing that's been occupying my time; is drawing on my Bamboo Tablet. For those unaware of what this is- it's basically a tablet [as it's implied] which you plug into your computer and it comes with a stylus to draw.. Being the sketch-artist I am, I figured without internet: why the fuck not. One drawing in particular that I did stuck out, and I'm going to show you- simply because I can [no self promotion or anything here!]

I think he looks kinda pretty, don't you?
———————————————————————————–

If you follow the fan page on Facebook, [found here] you probably would have noticed that I mentioned that there is a load of new posts coming to Firework Eyes & Haunted Hearts; and this is true. Considering I am now in an apartment, I find that some posts may actually be posted late at night.. This is possible because when Steph goes to bed, I can officially stay up [in the living room, sitting on the couch: which is where I am now as I type this] and type to my life's content [assuming I don't need to get up super early the next morning]. As opposed to before when we were living at my grandparents; if I wanted to type when she goes to sleep, the light of the laptop would more than likely keep her awake.  I guess that's basically an update on how the move went, and what is now fully expected here on Firework Eyes & Haunted Hearts; Expect a lot.. Even to the point where there may be more than one post a day!
