So WHAT exactly is a Krampus?!

[Note: I understand not everyone celebrates Christmas, this post is not bias or judgemental in anyway, and I believe you can celebrate whatever you wish this December25th] Seeing as Christmas is coming faster than ever, and I am finally done with Christmas shopping [not to mention the fact that I happened to get Christmas off at work!] - I figured I'd post about my favorite mythological creature: The Krampus.

In short, The Krampus is a demonic, goat-like creature found in the Alpine [and surrounding] countries' folklore which supposedly rides along with good ol' Santa, and actually punishes and tortures children who have been naughty. Coal in your stocking doesn't sound too bad now does it?? The Krampus is known for using whips, chains, blades, and sometimes- he'll [it IS a 'he', right?] even go so far as to kidnap kids from their beds.. assuming they're weren't good through-out the year.

[I think he's just a misunderstood beast..]

———————————————————————————–

If there was ever a creature to be scared of this [and every other] Christmas, it's this guy. Hell, he makes the Santa Claus from Santa's Slay and Silent Night-Deadly Night [two excellent horror flicks- perfect for this time of year!] combined look safe! ..okay, maybe not- but you get my meaning. I did some research on Santa's little demon friend, and came across the photos used above; apparently they are cards [y'know, like Christmas cards..] that are specifically for kids from The Netherlands in order to make they realize they better be good, unless they want The Krampus coming after them! I'd certainly go to bed on time if I was threatened by this guy.. I mean, fuck- he's terrifying! I do congratulate the Alpines though for adding this twist on the 'naughty or nice lore', cause this fellow beast would make almost anyone nice. I know they got my vote!

[is Krampus ripping that kid's ears off?!]

Dawn Of The First Day; 72 Hours Remain.

http://www.pushselectmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/majora__s_mask___skull_kid_and_moon_by_tx_slade_xt-d5bu2d1.jpg

It's no secret that Majora's Mask is arguably my favorite video game of all time. But have you ever played a game, and tried looking  past the game itself and actually looked into the smaller details of the game- trying to figure out why things are the way they are? This is what a guy on ZeldaInformer named HylianDan [more commonly known as Dan Merill] did, and fuck, did he ever get into the details. The best part? He did it for a game called "The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask". Be forewarned that it is a lengthy article/argument, but if you haven't read it, I've posted a link here and it's well worth the read, especially if you're a Zelda fan!

———————————————————————————–

HylianDan makes a lot of solid points about the game, everything from the infamous Stone Temple, to the fact that Majora could actually be female! I've read this article about 100 times over, and I always notice something I missed previously; which makes me want to replay the game all the more. I remember when I was younger, Majora's Mask [as a video game] actually gave me nightmares, [which may explain my new love for it when I was a teenager leading into adulthood] all the flashing images of someone trying to destroy Termina, only having three days to save the entire world! Even for Link who bears The Triforce Of Courage, you have to admit, that's some heavy baggage on a guy!

http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/nintendo/zeldamajorasmask/MoonFalls610.jpg

[y'know; three days to save Termina or this happens..fuck.]

———————————————————————————–

and this large theory that Hylian Dan poses is just one of many. For example, take GameTheory's video on Youtube. [I'm talking about THIS particular video] According to the video, Link could potentially already be dead during the game, and be stuck in some kind of purgatory. AND THIS IS A CHILDREN'S VIDEO GAME. According to MatPat [who made the Youtube video I linked] Majora's Mask follows The Kübler-Ross Model, which states the 5 stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression & Acceptance.  I won't steal all MatPat's thunder, so I'd suggest to just watch the video, he's probably better at explaining it than me anyway.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that sometimes, a game is more than a game; sometimes, it actually reaches your subconscious- to the point of sending chills down your spine.. I know that Majora's Mask did that to me the first time I finished the game. I could not believe that so much sadness, so much grief, could make a game so great. Just knowing that the Acceptance stage at the end of the game is just so damn powerful, makes me thankful for even just being able to play the game to it's fullest. So I just want to say thanks Nintendo, for making one hell of an awesome game- It's easily number one on my top 5 games ever.. now please excuse me as I go and fire up the ol' Nintendo64 and break out the Majora's Mask cartridge- I have some replaying [y'know..again] to do!

HAPPY 100th POST: Here's some stuff that you may have missed this week!!

BRUCE CAMPBELL IS COMING TO OTTAWA'S COMIC-CON MAY 2014!

http://thefocusedfilmographer.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/bruce-campbell-4.jpg

GROOVY, BABY! This is easily my favorite news right now. Being a Canadian, our comic-cons [at least Ottawa's] usually attract guests from older 'geekery'. [the last time I went- 2 years ago- we got Lou Ferrigno and Patrick Stewart] But that doesn't stop us from going! The one thing I regret from my first comic-con was that same 2 years ago: due to the insanely long line up, I missed out on meeting Elvira. [that's like a horror fan's wet dream!] BUT this year, we're getting someone that I can't help but squeal at the idea of!  We're getting Bruce Campbell, The King himself, and I'm fucking stoked! I will be booking that weekend off and I promise that I will be getting a picture with him! [and of course, it will be posted here! COME'ON AND GET HERE ALREADY MAY 2014!]

MARVEL'S X-MEN APOCALYPSE ALREADY CONFIRMED FOR THE BIG SCREEN?

 http://x.annihil.us/u/prod/marvel/i/mg/2/00/4be83bc62cace.jpg
It was quite the bombshell (in nerd terms) when it was announced yesterday that 20th Century Fox would be releasing another X-Men film so fast on the heels of next summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it will be called X-Men: Apocalypse. So that was huge, but what can we gather now in terms of details about what this new film project will look like? One of our fellow nerd news websites thinks that they know they answer.
According to Bleeding Cool, X-Men: Apocalypse will have “a clear narrative thread that will string the two pictures together, and the character of Apocalypse is a good part of how this will work.”

Feels kinda fast, doesn't it? However, when it was announced on Tuesday that 20th Century Fox would be releasing [yet] another X-Men film even with next summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past not even released yet! Naturally, it came as a shock to a lot of comic book fans [myself included!] and it has been reported that it'll be called X-Men: Apocalypse. Where does Apocalypse fit in the [already fucked up] X-Men film story line? One of my more favorite nerd websites; Bleeding Cool, seems to think it has the answer.. According to Bleeding Cool [link here], X-Men: Apocalypse will have:
“a clear narrative thread that will string the two pictures together, and the character of Apocalypse is a good part of how this will work.”
Being as Apocalypse has his own comic book arc called 'Age of Apocalypse'; I'm safely assuming that this one won't be the last. X-Men: Apocalypse is slated to be in theaters 2016.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN2 GOT IT'S FIRST TRAILER

http://sciencefiction.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/AmazingSpiderMan2Banner.jpg

This was a long time coming. From small hints at the plot, to screen shots that made no sense. Naturally, a trailer was what we needed to clear at least a little bit of our confusion. [hell, I made a post here wondering if we really did see a Green Goblin screenshot] I'm super stoked for this sequel, cause it's finally getting the story right! At one point in the trailer, there's even hints at the Sinister Six [seen below]. If you haven't seen the trailer, then stop reading this, and click here!

[Could those be Vulture's wings on the left, and are those Doctor Octopus's 'arms' on the right?]

REMEMBER HOW BAD LEGION  WAS? IT'S GETTING IT'S OWN SHOW TITLED 'DOMINION'
[I wish I could say I was joking.]

  http://img2-3.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/100120/Legion-Paul-Bettany_400.jpg

If you're anything like me, you expected big things from the 2010 movie Legion. It was a film about the end of the world [isn't everything now a days?] and pitted demons against angels. It even had Doug Jones as a crazy Ice Cream Man- I mean, that's pretty fucking hardcore, right? except it wasn't. It was brutal to watch: with terrible acting, and terrible character development, I can't believe I actually finished the movie. Worst of all, the ending. Oh God, the ending.. [excuse the short rant]SPOILER; what do you mean the angels/demons just 'talk their differences out'?! Sorry, I'm glad that's off my chest. However, even though the movie was just plain bad [and I mean that as lightly as humanly possible], it seems Syfy has green lit a reboot as a TV show, which is going to be called“Dominion” which is supposedly going to be based on the awful 2010 film. The only thing confirmed so far is the show is set in the futuristic year 25 A.E. and revolves around battles between good and evil angels in what used to be Las Vegas. If we're lucky, the show may be half-decent..half.

REMEMBER THOSE SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK BOOKS? LOOKS LIKE IT'S COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU!

http://www.ginacrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/scary-stories.jpg

Oh childhood memories. I remember these books well- I'm trying to find copies of them in fact- [bonus points to someone who can help me out!] If you had your hands on these when I was younger, you were considered one of the brave kids. These stories revolved around all sorts of scary shit; from spiders crawling out of a boil on someone's face, to a clown who used a cleaver on kids who didn't laugh at his jokes; these books were fucking terrifying.. It was a wonder these were in children's libraries at school! [I remember seeing them mainly in the Scholastic Book Orders in grade4 and up.] But what if I was to tell you that the writers of some of the SAW films are writing a script to making a movie out of these books? Pretty fucking hardcore, right? Apparently the news became confirmed when a pitch from SAW, Piranha 3DD, Pacific Rim and Feast writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were part of a competitive bidding for the project to make this book series into a film. So far, all they've said is that the film will be “about a group of outcast kids who stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life." Stephen Gammell [who did the artwork for these books], I don't know where you are, or what you're up to now a days; but know that your art successfully scared the fuck out of me as a kid. I applaud you for that, since that's clearly what you intended to do, and it fucking worked!

IS THAT A GREEN GOBLIN I SEE? [The Amazing Spider-Man 2]

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for Peter Parker, life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen, high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

amazing-spider-man-2

I've talked about it a million and one times, but right now [in my opinion anyway] The Amazing Spider-Man film featuring Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield is easily one of the closest comic to movie adaptations released so far. Up until now, all we really knew about the sequel was that Electro and The Rhino were gonna be our villains, [maybe lining up for a Sinister Six movie plot??] and that Spidey's costume was going to get an upgrade [see below]!

http://cache.g4tv.com/ImageDb3/316234_S/the-amazing-spider-man-2-new-costume-revealed.jpg

HUGE difference between the first film [left] and the sequel [right]
and I'm not just talking about the new suit being a brighter red..

———————————————————————————–

Now a new picture [even if it is a little blurry] has surfaced for the film, and one seems to include what fans speculate to be none other than the infamous Green Goblin! [see below]

If this is The Green Goblin, I feel confident in saying the writers of the film are seemingly going to follow through with the classic comic story arc involving Gwen Stacey, even if it doesn't happen until another sequel- but I won't ruin that here..if you don't know what I'm talking about and still find yourself curious, Google is always an option. The one thing that I feel proves that the movie arc is going to follow the comic story is the fact that Mary Jane has been pushed to the third Amazing Spider-Man film; and we are getting Harry Osborn in this reboot series .. [could that be him on the Glider in the above photo?]
